When to Change a Furnace Filter

The exact period of time between filter changes varies based on a number of factors. These include the types of filters your furnace uses, the number of people living in your home, external factors like whether you live near a construction site, and more.

The best way to find out when to change your furnace filter is to have one of our technicians look at your furnace the next time they stop by. They should be able to tell you how long your filters should last.

If you don’t want to do that, change your filter every 1-3 months, all year long, unless there’s a season where you don’t use your heating or AC at all.

Steps to Change Your Furnace Filter

Every furnace filter changes out a little bit differently. You can find the exact instructions for your unit in the manual. If you don’t have the manual, you can usually find it online if you look up the make and model of your furnace.

Before you start, make sure your furnace is turned off. In general, you’ll then need to remove the access panel from your furnace before you can change out the filter. Once you’ve done this, slide the filter out. Take note of which direction it is facing inside the unit, because you’ll want to replace the new one the same way. Next, unwrap your new furnace filter and slide it back into the slot. Replace the access panel and make sure the furnace is working as normal.
