Sometimes, you might be able to fix your AC unit yourself! Here’s what you should know about common AC problems so you can decide how to proceed the next time you experience them in your home.
The AC Unit Doesn’t Turn On
If your AC won’t turn on, start by making sure it’s plugged in. Check your furnace switch to ensure that it’s on, too. Next, assess your circuit breaker or fuse box. Try turning down your thermostat 5-10 degrees and see if the air conditioning comes on then. If none of these things help, it’s time to bring in a pro to help solve your AC problem.
The AC Unit Won’t Blow Cold Air
If your air isn’t cool enough, check your furnace filter. If it’s full, change it out. You can also remove the cover from the outdoor AC unit and gently spray off the coils to see if removing debris makes things better. If your air still isn’t cool enough, give us a call and we’ll be there soon.
The AC Makes Sounds You’ve Never Heard Before
If your air conditioner is buzzing, hissing, screeching, or thumping, turn it off right away. Continuing to run it could cause more problems. If you can’t see something that is loose or broken, call a local AC company for help to find the source of the problem.

Some water leakage on a hot day is normal, at least for many AC units. However, excessive water leakage or coolant leakage is not normal at all. The Thermostat Isn’t Working
If you feel like your AC problems originate at your thermostat, try kicking it down a few degrees to make sure that doesn’t turn the unit on. If it doesn’t, find your manual or look it up online. Try resetting or recalibrating your thermostat according to the instructions you find. This can help it start working again. If that doesn’t help, bring in professional help.
