Tips For Drain Cleaning

When it comes to the plumbing in our Rock Springs-area homes, many folks adopt the attitude that ‘out of sight is out of mind.’ We have complex systems of drains and pipes running throughout our homes, but many of us don’t even give them a second thought. That is, of course, until something goes wrong. A clogged drain is not something that can be easily ignored — though it’s something that we have to deal with from time to time. The best policy is to keep those pipes and drains in mind, even when they’re not causing any problems!

At Champion Services, we offer a full range of plumbing services to the Southwest Wyoming area, including Evanston, Rock Springs and Green River. While we’re always ready to help with whatever plumbing issue you’re having, regular maintenance and taking care of your home’s plumbing will help reduce the chances of a stressful, and potentially costly, plumbing situation. As such, we’ve put together some drain cleaning tips for you below!

Pay Attention To The Problem

Looking out for early signs that there might be something going on with your plumbing is always a good idea. If you catch the signs early, it can help prevent the plumbing from getting out of hand. Look out for some of the following tell-tale signs you may need plumbing repair:

  • Water backing up in sink or toilet
  • Gurgling sounds from drain
  • Percolating sounds after using washer/shower/etc.
  • Lots of trees on your property

You might just be dealing with a simple clog, or there can be something more serious going on. There is even the chance of clogging or damage to your main sewer line, which can be due to the growth of tree roots. Make sure to pay attention to the habits and tendencies of your plumbing as well as the things that can be affecting it!

Try Home Remedies

If you are dealing with a rather simple clog, you might be able to fix it with a few straightforward steps.

One of the first things you might want to try is a good ol’ fashioned plunger. For many sink and toilet clogs, a regular and affordable home plunger can do the trick. These are commonplace in most homes and learning appropriate technique doesn’t require that much work.

If the plunger isn’t doing the trick, then your next step might involve purchasing a drain cleaner solution from your local supermarket. The effectiveness of drain cleaning solution can vary from product to product and situation to situation, but sometimes they can be useful. It is extremely important to read all of the labels on your drain cleaning solution and to use it appropriately. Follow the directions.

It is also important to not become overly-reliant on these store-bought solutions. Drain cleaning solutions can be damaging and corrosive to pipes if they are used too frequently. Over time, consistent usage of drain cleaning solutions will actually make your pipes worse off than before. It’s a good idea to be mindful of less-damaging alternatives; check out our “Eco-Friendly Tips for Unclogging Drains” blog post for more information!

When in doubt, it’s best to discuss your options with plumbers. Speaking of which…
