There are a lot of ways to approach a clogged drain. It can be tempting to just go to the local supermarket and get a powerful drain cleaner to pour down the sink. But this isn’t your only option — nor is necessarily the best option. In today’s blog post, we will take a look at some eco-friendly alternatives for unclogging those pesky clogged drains. 1. Use a Plunger
We’ve been surprised to learn how surprising it is to people that a plunger can be used for more than their toilets! Sure, you don’t want to use the same plunger in your kitchen sink that you’re using in your toilet, but the right plunger can make pretty quick work of some nasty clogs. There are different kinds of plungers that are specialized for different kinds of jobs.
Plungers for sinks are usually made with red rubber and have a shallow suction cup. In the end, plunging the drain may be all you need to do. The suction could force the clog away, leaving you with a clear drain — no chemicals needed. Couldn’t be much more eco-friendly than that, right?
2. Baking Powder Might Do the Trick
There’s no shortage of home remedies that promise a quick fix. Too often, though, they don’t do a whole lot. Luckily, in the case of baking powder (as well as our next tip), you have a home remedy on your hands that will actually remediate!
Baking powder is especially helpful when used in conjunction with the plunger method. Sometimes a plunger will help get rid of the primary clog, but you’ll still notice some degree of back-up. If this is the case, simply pour a cup of baking soda down it and then 3 cups of boiling water. This can help pull aways debris that remains caught in the drain.
3. The Power of Vinegar
Vinegar is sometimes used as a panacea. You can’t trust that it will fix everything, but you can trust that it can do some serious drain cleaning! You can think of all three of these things — plunger, baking powder, and vinegar — as the eco-friendly clog-cleaning trifecta. They’re best used together.
Sure, baking soda and vinegar have been used to erupt many middle school science projects — but it does more than that! Just pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, and then half a cup of white vinegar. You can also heat the vinegar first or follow up the combination with boiling water if it’s a really stubborn clog. This should go a long way in unclogging your drain. Just don’t follow up with a store-bought chemical, as these can lead to potentially harmful or corrosive reactions.
